SEO – So you want to be top of google in a day?

August 23rd, 2010

I’ll let you down gently.. number one on google in a day isn’t possible. Yes I know there are a number of companies out there that promise this, but there is also a number of law suites against them and huge discussion in their web design world about the amount of people who have fell for this.

These companies are somewhat reminiscent to the medicine salesmen of the old west, promising miracle cures in a bottle then moving on. Some of them may be able to do it for a day at the most but using blacklisted cheating methods that when google spot they ban and then you won’t have a chance of getting on google again for months. At inLIFEDesign we have had to re-do two lots of SEO work already this year for people who have paid these companies and had no results.

The SEO we do is real, it works and its lasting. As well as ongoing checks and free advice to help yourself (see bottom of this page).

Yes there is a good chance of getting you top, but not in a day, we wont lie to you. Think about it.. lets imagine your starting a trainer company selling just NIKE trainers.. if someone promises you a number one spot on google do you really think your going to beat NIKE for the top spot? Seriously? If you could pay for a top spot everyone would be doing it.. thus everyone would be top?!

First of all the most important factor is the more specific your business is the more you have a chance (although this obviously cannot always be helped) for example if your selling octopus hats in Smethick and someone Googles ‘octopus hats Smethick’.. then you’ll get top spot no problem. However if your a new jewellers on the jewelry quarter in Birmingham it’ll take a little more time and effort as there’s a lot of competition. This then of course depends on how good your competitors SEO (search Engine Optimisation) is, so if all those other jewelers have trash coded websites and no SEO.. again we can shoot you up the listings quicker. Its just common sense mixed with a dash of understanding.

Google uses a number of algorithms and key factors to determine its listing order. at inLIFEDesign we use a number of proven methods to work alongside these eg. links coming in, links going out, meta tags (which are not the main factor as most wrongfully believe), valid and appropriate markup code, key words embedded and more (we can’t give all our secrets now can we) at the same time some of these factors cannot be helped such as one of Googles key points is how long your sites been up and running (its web age) so for new sites its just a case of waiting for this one.

Googles algorithms are also prone to change so its important to stay on top of its methods. One of the main jobs at Phones4u was SEO work to get them top of search engines, this was about 4 years ago and even since then a lot has changed.

*Note : We mention google primarily as all other search engines either ‘borrow’ or copy its algorithms.. so if we work to google were working to them all.

The SEO work we do at inLIFEDesign is embedded throughout the code ensuring google gets every drop of information it needs to get you to the top, as well as other external methods to enable you to boost up the search engines as soon as possible. We perform ongoing check backs and key words plugged in and monthly emails sent direct to your inbox to show you how well your doing.

So you can rest assure SEO from inLIFEDesign will work and do its job, no gimmicks and quality search engine listings guaranteed. In the mean time here’s a few hints you can do yourself to help get up the search engines, and we recommend all customers to do even after our SEO work…

FREE inLIFEDesign SEO TIPS

  1. Get (relevant) links coming into your site : So if your sites about football.. links from kitchen sites won’t help, ask for othe rpeople with related content to ‘link swap’ you put a link to there’s in return for a link to yours
  2. Set (relevant) links outbound : link to other relevant sites, as above so link exchanges with other sites
  3. Content : Within your site text include a lot of the key words that you would expect people to type into search engines to find your site, embed these words throughout your general content and where possible link them to other relevant pages inside and outside of your website
  4. Update : The more often you update the more often google comes back, update often with relevant news items including key words (as above). But not too often if your updates are pointless.. don’t bore people.
  5. Socialise : Get facebook and twitter pages set up, link back and forth between your sites content and share with others. We do a lot of work setting up social accounts and ‘like buttons’ on sites with consultation on ‘social network advertising’ contact us for details on this.

inLIFEDesign in the papers with FREE local website scheme

August 20th, 2010

An image of inLIFEDesign web designers shiny bald head graced the first inside page of the local newspaper this week in the ‘Burntwood Post’ regarding the launch of WS7.co.uk. The website is a sideline project from inLIFEDesign in an aim to help get local business within the local town.

On top of designing and developing websites for large corporations inLIFEDesign often does a few sideline websites for local businesses. Although when it comes to smaller or new businesses a lot have no target on the web and simply just want to ‘be online’

An online presence is important more now than ever with more and more taking to google over the yellow pages, and if local companies don’t catch up they are going to fall behind. Yet at the same time getting a website can be confusing and often too expensive when all some companies want is a place on google.

This is where the idea for ws7.co.uk was born. With an essence of ‘charity starts at home’ the scheme is only available for local business in and around the Burntwood area (ws7 postcode) allowing not only business but the community to start their own basic website for free, no charge, easy log in and edit area with submission to search engines and your own domain name eg. yourname.ws7.co.uk.

The website stores an online business directory as well as local news, events and more. Funded through advertising WS7.co.uk allows users to get a website up and running in seconds, as well as advanced options to ‘go pro’ and get more themes and web space.

The local paper loved the idea and did a quick telephone / email interview to run the story.. ‘Free Web-Wizardry from the master’

Visit : WS7.co.uk for more information on getting a free website if you live in the Burntwood area.

Location location location

August 16th, 2010

Location based social media is on the rise, but still little known by some people.. and for those who don’t know what it is yet here is a quick overview of what your missing out on, and what you can expect to become big in marketing news within the next few years

Location based social media is the idea of allowing your mobile device or smart phone to tell the world where you are when you hit certain popular points of interest. The two big players in the game at the moment are apps for iPhone and android phones known as ‘gowalla’ and ‘four square’

Effectively what these apps do is allow you to ‘check in’ when your anywhere that has a location set-up with them, they know where you are via gps, and if they don’t have a location set up yet you can set one up there and then. You may think whats the point, but this has huge marketing potential.

Some places such as coffee houses are already offering rewards like a free cup of coffee if you check in more than 5 times in a month.. and there is no way of cheating, they really know if you’ve been there or not. Places also keep leaderboards, allow you to upload images, pick up and drop ‘virtual items’ as you move around, become the mayor of certain locations and much more.

Of course at the moment they rely on you hitting a ‘check in’ button when your are there but there is talk of them soon being able to auto detect your presence and not just on a flat scale, also vertically (I.e the 5th floor of a tower block) by using wifi positioning. As well as auto checking you in if your at a location for over a certain time. Again this would have to be turned on first within your device as not everyone wants people to know where they are at all times. But I personally believe it’s another step to an open an honest world that will come about as a result of the web.

You can read more on upcoming advances in the area here

Also now gap are offering 25% discount for foursquare check ins

* ADDITONAL EDITORS NOTE * This has been added afterwards.. as shortly after this article facebook announced its launch of ‘facebook places’ its own built in location ‘checking in’ service which has been launched in the US and coming to the UK soon. We didn’t know about this when releasing the article.. but goes to show its the way forwards. See more on facebook places here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfX_ZQag1BM

Midlands, Lichfield, Cannock based Web Designer

March 25th, 2010

Just a quick post to say where inLIFE is based and its roots. Dave here.. (head designer) from the midlands uk. Good web designers round here are sketchy, few and far between! Although there are some.. don’t get me wrong. But this was one of the mai reasons for originally starting DLW web design (now known as inLIFEDesign & Media)

I studied at staffordshire university, where I did an honours degree in Computing Science and web design, but when it come to finding a years work placement as part of the course in web design all the jobs were in London. Having a 1 year old daughter at the time this wasnt feasable, and back then there were simply NO web design firms in the midlands in and around Lichfield, Rugely, Brownhills, Cannock or anywhere around the outskirts of Birmingham (besides small and basic bedroom designers). So instead got a job working for IBM in stoke on trent doing I.T support.

When leaving university it was then difficult to get a job in web design with the only in-house experience coming from I.T support, so I went on to work as I.T support and programmer at iSoft. Whilst here at home i continued to work on websites for friends and family until I finally managed to get my foot in the door as Junior web designer at Phones4u. The head designer quickly left and I soon took on the role as well as outsourcing work and microsites for their sponsors such as 50Cent, FIFA and Takethat when they relaunched. Here I also did a huge project in Search engine optimisation and was solely responsible for their rise up the search engine rankings, which has since dropped since I have left I may add.

This is when the Job as web designer at Staffordshire university came about, the website needed a overhaul and shakeup so what better to take on an ex graduate to do the job. I worked at Staffs uni full time for a year however was met with a lot of red tape from an I.T team who had been working there years, so the website would never be able to go in the direction it needed.

This is when by chance I spotted the web design job going at VIBE audio www.vibeaudio.co.uk not only were cars my first passion but also this was a chance to re-design a site from scratch with exciting new opportunities and forward thinking that the website needed. The VIBE site was entirely my own project, as well as sister sites such as www.edgecaraudio.com www.fliaudio.com www.midbass.com and then the continuous updating, analytics, search engine optimisation and online marketing.
